Separation vs. Divorce: Surprising Survey Results

A recent Gallup survey, which assessed over 130,000 adults across the United States using the “Healthways Well-Being Index,” delivered some surprising insights. The survey suggests that separation is substantially more stressful than being divorced.

Stress Levels Among Different Relationship Stages

Researchers found that people going through separation reported much higher stress levels compared to those who were married or divorced:

  • 38.6% of married people admitted to being stressed on the day of the survey.
  • 44.1% of divorced people reported feeling stressed.
  • A significant 51% of people who were separated – but not yet divorced – said they were stressed.

Expert Insight

Dan Witters, the Gallup study’s author, provided some insight: “At least when you are divorced, there is closure…you can both move on with your lives.” The study also revealed that people in the process of separation are more likely to use drugs and prescription medications. According to the survey:

  • 29% of the separated cohort said they had recently used drugs or medications.
  • Only 17% of married people reported the same.

Why Is Separation More Stressful?

Human beings generally dislike prolonged periods of uncertainty. We thrive on consistency and routine to maintain stability and happiness. The process of divorce disrupts this stability, which can explain the temporary reduction in happiness and self-esteem.

A Universal Experience

Fortunately, this experience is far from unique. As Witters told the Huffington Post: “Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that you’re in it alone or that what you’re experiencing is unique… I think there can be comfort in knowing that this is pretty normal and that this is something that most people go through.”
